Anime Roundtable #40

Sorry for the delay since Mike was actually enjoying more than a few post Valentines Day drinks.

This week, after the Gospel according to Neil and Adam, and Mike’s chocolate odyssey, some thoughts on Funimation and Geneon, the closing of the Sakura Wars cafe, some EVA hot coffee, and the latest attempt at lonely otaku money in Akihabara. Then the obligatory Valentines and anime talk. With your predictable spins.

Lordy, lordy, look who’s forty…and this episode is likely to leave more than a few grey hairs.

Mike Nicolas, Neil Sinclair, James Austin, Adam Grant. (1:06:35)

And as an apology for being late, here’s some chocolate. After you watch this just ask yourself, “Was it as good for you as it was for me?”.

  1. ACFTM says:

Man, if I knew you were “desperate” for comments, I’d try commenting for every podcast :p What episode were you wanting to do but needed input from the listeners? Was it for a hotsprings episode or something? I’d try replaying that part and turning up the volume, but it’s 12:45 AM and everybody’s asleep.

Favourite anime couples (most likely not from the last 3 years): Sana and Akito from Kodocha, and Maron and Chiaki from Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne.

That chocolate video was gross 😡 Not the actions but the melting *shudders*

  2. Strike says:

Hey guys, how’s it going? I recently started listening to your podcast back in January, but I have also started to listen to some of your old stuff as well. You guys should have a hotsprings episode that would be hysterical!

Anyway for favorite anime couples from recent series would be Sagi Crossroad and Louise Halevy from Gundam 00, Aono Tsukune and Akashiya Moka from Rosario + Vampire, and Okazaki Tomoya and Furukawa Nagisa from Clannad (although its unofficial but you know its gonna happen).

Well thats about it, keep up the great work guys!

  3. Skwerly says:

(Hey now, I’ve commented on a lot of the podcasts so far.)

Sorry, I have no suggestions for hot springs as I honestly don’t pay attention to them.

As for anime couples, recent series would probably be Kyon and Haruhi
Old school for me is Lady Oscar and Andre Grandier

Regarding Eva products, I recently reviewed a bag of Eva Doritos:

  4. Kent says:

For hot springs episodes, I though Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei had a funny one.

As for couples, although it’s a little older than the three year limit you imposed, I thought Ai and Hachimaki from Planetes made an all right couple. Also, the couple at the end of Paprika (providing the names might be a spoiler).

  5. Leon says:

I haven’t seen much of 90s anime so for the couples, they are kind of recent:

Risa Koizumi and Atsushi Otani (Lovely Complex)
Kozue Aoba and Ryuushi Shiratori (Mahoraba)
Suzuka Asahina and Yamato Akitsuki (Suzuka)
Karin Maaka and Kenta Usui (Karin)

Those are some of my favourite.

  6. Buster Blader 126 says:

I don’t know about Suzuka and Yamato. As much as I do like Suzuka (the anime), the main couple is definitely one of the more unlikable characters in anime (if not THE most unlikable couple in recent years).

Unfortunately, only one hot springs episode comes into mind at the moment, and that would be the Shakugan no Shana OVA, with Matake being the main star, believe it or not.

As for favourite couples, my #1 is Kei and Mizuho from Please Teacher!. More recent examples would be:

    – Rin and the winning girl (don’t want to say in case of spoilers), from Shuffle!
    – Yu and Haruka, from Noein
    – Renji and Chihiro, from ef – a tale of memories
    – Yukari and George, from Paradise Kiss

    – Takefumi and Tsubaki, from Kare Kano/His and Her Circumstances (Not a recent one in terms of age, but it’s personally a more recent couple that I like, as I’m currently reading Kare Kano for the first time.)

  7. Walt says:

In regards to favorite anime couples (dysfunctional).
Guyver 2005 – Shō and Mizuki
Kite – (For Adam) – Sawaand Oburi
Mezzo Forte – Mezzo and the Old Man
Mermaid Forest Revival 2004 – Mana and Yuta
Slayers – Lina and Gourry (Dated some like her great s (I’m at work), but somewhat insane,) Looked and sounded just like her and was on a quest for bigger ones.

  8. Walt says:

Hotsprings – Plastic Little, DVD has a giggle counter
    Rama – Of course

  9. koneko-chan says:

Haha. I guess ranting about not receiving comments for a few minutes is a good way to get listeners out of the woodwork.

I’ve already stated somewhere before (i think by email) that Shuffle! Memories episode 12 is a good pseudo hot springs episode (pseudo because it takes place on the king of the gods personal vacation airship). Another one that comes to mind (since sis rewatched the series recently) is the 8th episode of Mamoru-kun ni Megami no Shukufuku wo!. Sis just reminded me a few more such as Minami-ke: Okawari episode 1 and Sola OVA 1.

As for couples, some of my all-time favorites happen to be yuri pairings:
    – Nanoha and Fate from Mahou Shoujo Nanoha
    – Chikane and Himeko from Kannazuki no Miko

As for more normal couples, usually the main guy doesn’t hook up with the girl I like (Kyou in Clannad) or the guy is an idiot (Matsuri deserves better than Yurito in sola). Yet, here are a few couples that stick out in my mind:
    – Yuuichi and Rika from Hanbun Tsuki
    – Tooya and Aya from Ayashi no Ceres (because this is one of the first i saw and liked)
    – Hiro and Miyako from ef (because they seem to mesh better than Renji and Chihiro)
