Anime Roundtable #45

This week, some thoughts on St. Patrick’s Day and Easter, the fallout from a quick and painful Artist Alley registration, Tekkon Kinkreet as a “bookend” to the Japanese anime industry (and goes somewhere else), and a lash out on life sized anime dolls.

Yup yup. Artist Alley registration was a flurry of nerves and hoping that your brain/e-mail/internet connection/electricity doesn’t crap out. Despite the higher and higher demand, the prices for the spaces have risen over the years.

According to my records (yeah, I record all the amounts I’ve sent cheques for), since they’ve changed the method of registration to “you must already have pre-registered (ie pay for gen. admission) for Anime North before trying to apply for a space in the Artist Alley”:
    2006: $15 for a half table
    2007: $20 for a half table
    2008: $35 for a half table
This, of course, is most likely due to the increasing cost of rental space of the venue(s), but still interesting to note that, from my wanderings, no one dares to complain about the increase. One hopes that this means that people (mostly younger people) and realizing the impact of inflation as opposed to screaming (unwarranted) accusations of greed towards the wrong parties.

    Sorry, Mike.

    I had to do this:

Honestly, I think the Artist Alley has been undervaluing itself considerably for years. CN Anime costs something like $180 for two people, including the cost of memberships, so it’s finally catching up to CN’s rates.

I really don’t mind the increase if the Artist Alley gets the funding it needs. It’s still quite affordable, especially considering most artists can make up the costs in sales rather quickly.

Angela, I think so too, whether it be AN or CN, especially considering the alternative is the Dealer Room. That’s the other funny thing too. Some people thing that the CN tables are wayyyyyy more expensive than the AN ones, while it really isn’t considering what’s included.

Actually, I think the more “mature” participants in the alley feel that way. (by “mature”, I’m referring to the person’s mentality and not age). I have, however, seen people whining about the increases in the past and blaming it squarely on convention organizations. Hurts my brain. I’m hoping for a brighter future! πŸ˜€

In somewhat other news, let’s hope this doesn’t ever happen at AN or CN: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-03-24/anime-boston-congoers-report-10-hour-registration-waits

I’m not going to live down the spit take am I? At least not any time soon.

Yeah, I read the report on what happened in Boston over the weekend just now. Boy oh boy what happened? Although when the growth was about 50% from last year, I mean some things can only be handled so well. The real question to me is whether or not the organizers expected that.

I am sure AN saw something like that in the past too. Although what the details might be is best left in the past as well.

About the Gackt comment, he was part of some band called SKIN for Anime Expo last year.

Another Japanese guest has been announced a while back as well – I don’t know which con they’re going to, but the group Halcali are also coming over. They’re the ones who did the 3rd Ending of Eureka Seven and the Opening for Getsumen to Heiki Miina.

It was also nice to hear Dean again, since it’s been some time since he’s done an episode.

In any case, it was another good episode. The absence of Adam certainly didn’t lower the episode’s enjoyability for me. It was nice catching this one in person.

I would have loved to be at that SKIN concert! It was Yoshiki (from X-Japan) who started SKIN with Gackt, Miyavi, and Sugizo from Luna Sea. It’s like a visual kei All-Star team!

Okina, that was a beautiful spit take. πŸ˜€

  8. Okina says:

You know I forgot that the Pillows were at Anime Boston this past weekend too. I believe they did the theme from FLCL. So Japanese music guests seem there again to an extent. But I don’t know of many industry and voice guests Japanese wise. Of course time will tell.

  9. Dean says:

Oh boy, that spit take is hilarious, what episode was that from?

  10. Angela says:

It’s from Adam’s final insult in episode 43, skip to the end of the video if you want to see it in full. Thanks Skwerly for the gif!
