Anime Roundtable v2.0 #51 – September 25 2021: Mo Money, Mo Problems

After starting with a little toilet humour…

2:47 – Mike being a casual esports watcher reflects on the gatekeeping culture of fandoms being a longtime anime and manga watcher, after feeling a little out of place talking Overwatch League Playoffs with more seasoned fans, and having the tables turned on him

Which leads to the main topic…

10:25 – Mike thought he saw a common thread about Kim Morressey’s article earlier in the month on the Cool Japan initiative, Daryl Surrat’s take on fandom and creators, and the issues with the Manga Plus app and translating. Can you see it?

Then we begin the Bullets Segment

50:32 – The Nintendo Direct announced the voice cast for the upcoming animated Super Mario Bros movie with Chris Pratt in the titicular role and the conversation that has started. Which leads to a debate of producers preferring mainstream actors over established voice over artists in an animated Hollywood movie

1:10:55 – So rather quietly, a Saint Seiya live action movie was completed. No one seems to care in North America, but it does have attention elsewhere. And that has Mike wondering about the various pockets of overseas fandom, and does some regions have bigger egos than others

1:26:16 – Reactions to the first trailer of Netflix’s live action Cowboy Bebop. And still no Ed. And Moh has an announcement in relation to all of this

This week’s drinking game: Take a shot when the gang is all here

Mike Nicolas, James Austin, Mohamed Sharmarke, Geoff Greig, and Kevin Ng (eventually)

Opening Theme provided by Scott Holmes Music
