Anime Roundtable v2.0 #46 – July 4 2021: The second annual COVID convention season cometh

We start this week with the obligatory COVID update, and Mike having a mic issue…again. This time with the update though, this one is personal since the regulars have now been fully vaccinated in this PSA. Then we actually get down to business

21:27 – We look at the unofficial start of convention season as we give a few thoughts on Aniplex Online and Anime Expo going on during the weekend of the taping, and Anime Matsuri and Anime Lockdown which are set for next weekend. With a few thoughts on some recent online concerts too

Then the Bullets Segment (51:10)

51:30 – Criticism of the use of Anime imagery in the promotion of the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, and how this feels like a miss on a few different angles

1:00:10 – Streaming news. Moh gives his thoughts on the Gundam Hathaway movie on Netflix. Robotech coming to Funimation

1:04:20 – Rumiko Takahashi talks about her work routines and how much control she has over that these days. And then we look at a commemorative figure to celebrate the 35th anniversary of one of her most beloved works, Maison Ikkoku

1:14:24 – Amazon Prime picking up the EVA Rebuild movies. And how much like the Evangelion story itself, its various rights seem to go different places at different times on different platforms

1:17:50 – Hikaru Utada coming out as non-binary and how that may impact LGBTQ+ in Japan and the video game worlds

1:30:54 – Kevin gives some quick manga notes. Blue Exorcist hiatus, Kodansha and Seven Seas announcements, Tezuka reprints, Dempa licenses

1:36:00 – Jesse Betteridge pointed out that CBC’s streaming service Gem has picked up a few Japanese documentaries and dramas

1:37:30 – Mike has added more Hatsukoi covers to the Kozo Murashita story he told a couple weeks ago. He recommends TM Revolution/Momiro Clover Z performance

This week’s drinking game: Take a shot when Mike realizes that his regular mic is not connected properly and moves to fix that. Because there’s nothing like a well run podcast…and this is nothing like a well run podcast…
